“Eric Berry for Heisman” UT campaign includes ringtone on Phonezoo.com

August 18, 2009

UT Athletics uses Phonezoo.com in promotional campaign

Popularity of leading US online & mobile entertainment site enables unique reach

http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jul/21/berry-extensive-campaign-heisman/

Eric Berry is an All-American safety. He’s the reigning SEC defensive player of the year. As of Tuesday morning, he’s officially a Heisman Trophy candidate.

And if Tennessee has its way, he’ll soon become an Internet sensation.

UT’s Heisman campaign for Berry will include some traditional components — an Eric Berry “Word of the Week” calendar mailed to national media members, for instance, and a giant jersey with his No. 14 will be on display before and after games. But the bulk of Tennessee’s first Heisman marketing plan since Peyton Manning’s in 1997 will take place in cyberspace.

There’s already a dedicated Web site (Berry4Heisman.com), pages on Facebook (Berry4Heisman) and Twitter (Berry4Heisman).

There’s even a free ringtone of fans chanting Berry’s name during the Mississippi State game last fall available for download at PhoneZoo.com.

Soon, there will be a series of YouTube videos, all in hopes of generating a buzz around the dynamic junior safety.

UT director of public relations Tiffany Carpenter, who is heading up Berry’s campaign, said there are other elements that will be revealed throughout the season as well.

“Viral marketing is something that can be very useful,” Carpenter said. “It’s inexpensive. It’s immediate. There’s so many social networking tools out there that we need to use effectively. We’ve got a series of ads we’re creating that we’ll send out sometime in August. It’s just ways to get people talking about Eric and get some buzz surrounding him. It’s also to change people’s way of thinking that it always has to be a quarterback.”

Although a quarterback has won the award eight of the last nine seasons, precedent does exist for a defensive back winning the Heisman Trophy — not that most Tennessee fans need a reminder.

Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson edged former UT quarterback Manning for the award in 1997, largely due to playing some on offense and returning kicks. UT coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday that Berry could return kicks this fall, but the 5-foot-11 junior won’t factor in the Vols’ plans on offense.

“I would never play someone somewhere based on any award,” Kiffin said. “I was hired here to win games and do the best thing for our team. We’re going to do whatever it takes to win (games). To put Eric over there, I really don’t see that helping us win.”

He also said Berry, who caught a pass at wide receiver against Alabama, and rushed for 37 yards on seven carries in 2008, needs as much time as possible on defense so he can become fluent in Monte Kiffin’s Cover 2 defense.

“This defensive scheme is even going to make him better,” Lane Kiffin said. “Remember, he’s learning a brand new scheme, so it’s not like he’s going into his third year of a scheme and, ‘OK, let’s take him over to offense this week because he knows the defense so well.’ He needs all the reps. … I want to make sure that he’s the best safety in America.”

There’s little competition for Berry on that front.

Heading into his junior season, the Atlanta-area native needs just 15 interception return yards to break former Florida State star Terrell Buckley’s 18-year-old NCAA career record of 501 yards. Last season, he tied for the lead nationally with seven interceptions.

He also was one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s best defensive back. Southern California’s Taylor Mays, another Thorpe finalist from last year, also returns. However, Kiffin said Berry is more versatile, albeit smaller, than the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mays.

The versatility, and his ability to return interceptions, is one of the reasons many NFL draft analysts have Berry landing somewhere in the top 15 picks if he elects to turn pro, as most expect, following the season. And Kiffin knows that Berry likely won’t return for his final season in 2010.

“I’ve already given up that Eric won’t be here for his last year,” joked Kiffin, who coached at USC from 2001-06. “I’ll be interested to see how the NFL looks at it, because there will be certain teams that’ll want to draft one instead of the other because of that.”

In many ways, that’s a tribute to what Berry has accomplished in only two years on campus. Plans have been in the works since the middle of last season — perhaps longer — to market Berry for the Heisman this season. Berry found out in February that UT was planning a campaign and received approval from Berry’s parents, including his father James, a former Vols standout, in April.

Berry, who was not part of Tuesday’s press conference, was “floored” when told of the plans, Carpenter said.

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton was a little less surprised.

“For me, it’s hard to believe he didn’t win the Thorpe Award last year,” Hamilton said. “I think he represents everything that’s right about what Heisman candidates should look like. I fully support the staff’s efforts to make sure that the national media and the public knows that Eric Berry is worthy of that kind of consideration.”

Phonezoo brings Charlee Drew to U.S. audience

August 12, 2009

On July 6, 2009, Charlee Drew debuted on Phonezoo.com. Nearly 3,000 ringtone downloads in three days; contributing to the massive ensemble of 70,000+ ringtones already available on Phonezoo.com, the singer put up his three most popular songs: “Sugar Rush”, “Do You Love Me”, and “Run Away” respectively.

“When your phone rings, I sing!” the singer rejoiced.

With over 25,000 total ringtone downloads on Phonezoo.com, Charlee can add the brood of Phonezoo users to his U.S. fan-base. This English guitar-playing, pianist is an unsigned singer and songwriter but he manages to have thousands of visits to his websites from all over the world for his put-it-on-repeat worthy music. Achieving over 250,000+ music plays on his website (CharleeDrew.com), his original track “Sugar Rush” has recently been added to the MySpace online series soundtrack of “Freak”. It’s no surprise that he was crowned “the U.K.’s new hottest unsigned singer” by various online blogs.

“Uploading my tracks to Phonezoo has really helped me gain some loyal followers over the big ocean. It is amazing yet bizarre to think that so many people are walking around with my tracks on their phone” commented Charlee. “I feel warm and tingly inside, and a little bit excited that I am the first international feature artist on Phonezoo!”

Currently, Charlee has not set a date to release any of his songs but they are available as free ringtone downloads on his profile at Phonezoo.com.

Many artists, like Charlee Drew, have gained tremendous exposure to a young and engaged audience through sharing their songs as downloadable ringtones for free. Phonezoo.com has become preferred channel for undiscovered, independent artists to gain publicity for their music and to network with other unsigned artists.

Mea culpa leads to better things ….

When we introduced messaging on Phonezoo we had no idea it would become so popular. As the social network on Phonezoo grew, users started visiting their feeds section to keep checking on messages they got from friends & other users. A long time request was to allow users to see messages in a separate area.

When we reformatted the feeds functionality last week, we overlooked the effect of mixing feeds with messages – boy, did we hear about it from you guys …. thanks! We quickly pulled the design team together and came up with an INBOX area on Phonezoo. This will be an easy tab off of the main menu and will allow you to see messages sent directly to you. Updates and content creation messages will go to My Feeds.

Note that this is an initial implementation of the INBOX functionality and will not have all the features associated with a mail program like Outlook or Yahoo!. However as we continue to evolve this section, we will look for usage patterns & feedback from you guys to let us know what features you want added. So, go ahead and fill up the Phonezoo_support feeds section …err, INBOX  :-) enjoy!

Where did I get all this new stuff from?

July 22, 2009

Overall, the product updates we pushed out yesterday were received well by some users and not as much by others.  We received a good number of feedback in our support emails and also monitored user comments in public feeds.  Majority of the constructive feedback boiled down to two specific areas.

Considerable number of people were taken aback by the new messaging default where only Friends can message you.  We understand this has caused angst among some users but community overall will benefit from this change as it improves privacy and security for everyone.  Users who want to receive messages from anyone can still do so, by simply changing the messaging option under My Zoo > Privacy Settings.

Also, users who have lots of Friends and Favorites started seeing too many status updates and other public activities of their Friends and Favorites showing up in their feeds.  This seems to have overloaded their feeds and got in the way of their messaging.  This was an oversight on our part and we should have provided an option to control this.  To address this issue we are planning two changes:

  1. We will be updating the product tonight and provide additional options in Privacy Settings to control what you see in My Feeds.  You can choose to see what your friends and favorites are doing or can turn it off – by default it is turned on.
  2. Within next 1-2 weeks, we will break off messaging from feeds.  This will allow you to process incoming messages separately and more efficiently instead of having to search through all the feeds.  We are currently designing this and will have an update for you shortly.

We hope this addresses the short comings in our recent product updates.  We value your feedback strongly, so please keep it coming.  Thanks for using Phonezoo.

Where did my stuff go?

July 21, 2009

In case you are wondering why some of the site functionality changed or you stopped receiving feeds, read on.

A good number of people were getting confused about the definitions of Friends & Followers and were getting lost trying to figure out how to sign up for or stop feeds.  Overall, the previous feed management design was little bit too complex for everyone except power users (you know who you are!).

Tonight, we took multiple steps to address this confusion.  If you are a Phonezoo user who had Friends or Followers and were actively consuming the Feeds section, you should read this carefully as this impacts you.

We changed the naming for Best Friends, Friends, Followers to reflect what they truly mean.  Friends has been renamed to Favorites to reflect the one way relationship it implies – you can add someone as a favorite and you don’t need their approval. Followers has been renamed to Fans to reflect that when someone adds you as a Favorite, they are becoming your fans.  And Best Friends has been renamed to Friends and it requires two way acceptance as before.  All these functionality is conveniently available under the My Zoo tab along with all of your other content.

Feeds is becoming a fast growing section in the site and many users go their first to see what their friends are doing within Phonezoo.  To reflect this, the Feeds tab now defaults to My Feeds where you can track what your Friends and Favorites are doing.  Public Feeds, where you can see what the rest of Phonezoo community is doing, is available as a separate secondary tab.

Perhaps, the most important change of all is in the enhanced Privacy Settings page.  We have consolidated feed management functionality in to your privacy settings so you can control everything in one place.  Options to decide what feeds you receive in email and text are simplified so your decision making becomes much easier.

As part of this consolidation of your messaging and feeds options in Privacy Settings, we had to change some of the defaults.  This means, if you signed up for some of the feeds to be sent to you via email or text message, they would stop until you go sign up again.  Also, by default only your Friends can send you a message unless you change it to allow anyone in the community to message you.  We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you but we believe these changes significantly eliminate most of the abuse possibilities inherent in a open messaging environment.

We are excited about these changes as they bring more clarity and provide more control to our users in community.  We are working on additional messaging capabilities and new applications/contents and we will roll them out over the next few weeks/months.

As always, we look forward to your feedback. We thank you for using Phonezoo.

Of course this is just a very small beginning. We do realize that one of the most frequently asked questions is going to be about how to get the games on the phone. We are still working on find an elegant solution for this – haven’t found any providers of free quality mobile games that combine delivery with advertising – but we continue to look for a good solution.  Another question is about high scores. Some games will feature the ability to store high scores, but most don’t. We are working on adding this functionality in partnership with the game networks. Some time after that we will be adding multi-player games, mobile text-messaging based games, high value subscription based offers and lots of exciting features. Stay tuned!

Email support@phonezoo.com if you have any thoughts and ideas about making the game section even better. Thanks for the continued support!

What does your ringtone say about you?

March 22, 2009

Riding the bus to work, catching your last few morsels of sleep before beginning your day, when all of the sudden, the grandfather in a suit seated next to you fumbles to find his phone–not to answer it, but to turn off the Lil Wayne song blaring from his smartphone.  Groggy passengers open their eyes to see where the music is coming from, only to vaguely conceal their chuckle when they see the owner of the phone.  The gentleman smiles wryly as he answers his phone.  What does this ringtone say about the man?  It might mean he is a pretty fresh grandfather.  Maybe he has a creative sense of humor or prankster grandkids.  Whatever it says, that ringtone gave you a whole new perception of the man you see five days a week on the bus!

Most all of us have experienced a situation like this.  Whether on the bus, at work, at school, or at the mall, wherever we hear a ringtone, we notice.  It’s even more noticeable and interesting when you never would have guessed the owner of a particular ringtone.  Little did the passengers on the bus know the gentle grandfather had uploaded his favorite Lil Wayne song to create, and then download a ringtone on Phonezoo!  As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover!

What does your ringtone say about you?  What are your favorite ringtones?  You’re sure to find ringtones or create them yourself on Phonezoo.  Do you go for the latest in popular music?  Are you old skool?  Maybe you’d like to record your own voice and announce the caller.  Will your faithful golden retriever bark his way into your ringtone?

Whatever it is you choose, it makes a statement!  Ringtones are fun for everyone with a cell phone and the possibilities are endless on Phonezoo.  Like the grandfather on the bus, feel free to upload your own music to create your tone or record your best friend’s voice!  Are you an aspiring musician?  Why not hum a few bars, jam with your friends, or deliver a fresh beat on Phonezoo?  Ringtones express your personality.  Go ahead and share something new, show off your favorite band, sports team, or television show!  Have fun with your ringtones.  Have fun with Phonezoo!
